INTRODUCTION
The English language has always fascinated me. It is both descriptive and complex ... and I admire anyone who learns it as a second language.
There are nine parts of speech in the English language - and within each, there will be a number of sub-categories:
- Adjectives
- tell of the kind of noun - Adverbs - how things are being done - Articles - define the noun |
- Conjunctions
- join words together - Interjections - indicates surprise - Nouns - the name of anything |
- Prepositions
- stands before a noun - Pronouns - instead of a noun - Verbs - something being done |
Generally, sentences follow a standard format:
- Subject
- Verb
- Object
- Subject
- Verb
- Object
There are:
- 'simple sentences' - consisting of a main clause or statement
- 'compound sentences' - consisting of two or more main clauses
- 'complex sentences' - consisting of main clauses and subordinate clauses
