spelling

SPELLING ...
Vowels, Consonant, Silent 'e', Adding 'ed' and the Silent 'h'
vowels
The vowels - a, e, i, o, u, (y) make the sound of the word - that is, making its alphabetic sound.

The letter 'y' can be a vowel or a consonant, depending upon its position in the word
-      gym, sky, why, bicycle, carry, syllabus (making the 'y' sound like a vowel).
-      yatch, yellow, young (making the 'y' sound like a consonant).

  • No words can manage without vowels.  Vowel sounds join the consonants together.

  • No English words end in 'i',  'j' or 'v'.

  • Double the consonants 'f', 'l', 's' and 'z' after a single vowel at the end of a short word - for instance: fizz, miss, toss, jazz.
Exceptions to this are: if, of, this, yes, plus, nil, pal, rule, us, bus, gas,
CONSONANTS
b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m. n, p, q, r, s, t - make the shape of the vowel.
the silent 'E'
E at the end of a word makes the vowel say its alphabetic name.  The 'e' is always silent.
-       Cap + e = cape
-       Cub + e = cube
-       Her + e  = here
-       Not + e  = note
-       Pin + e   = pine
ADDING 'ED' AT THE END OF A WORD
If the original word ends in an 'e', simply add the letter 'd'.
-        Love     =  loved
-        Like       = liked

If the word ends in a consonant followed by a 'y', change that 'y' to an 'i' and then add 'ed'.
-        Marry    = married
-        Carry     = carried
-        Hurry     = hurried
SILENT 'H'
There are only four silent 'h' words:

For these words, use 'an' in front, not 'a'.
-       Heir       =  an heir to the throne
-       Honest  =  an honest person
-       Honour  =  an honour to be his friend
-       Hour      =  it will take an hour or two
